The people of Pembroke Port are integral to delivering a positive impact on the local economy and community. With such a variety of people involved in operations and business activity, from the Port team, to supply chain businesses located in the former Royal Dockyard area, and beyond, we love to shine the spotlight on individuals from across the business community here.

This month, we're featuring David Jones, a Gatehouse Operative at Pembroke Dock Ferry Terminal.

Name: David Jones
Job role: Gatehouse Operative
How long have you worked here?: 22 years

Can you tell us about your role and the team you work with?

My role varies from day-to-day, but my main responsibilities are to ensure PDFT (Pembroke Dock Ferry Terminal) security requirements are met and maintained, carry out security searches in line with PDFT requirements and ensure that HMRC conditions of freight entry to Pembroke Port are adhered to, such as a valid GMR, PBN etc.

I also identify cargo and ensure relevant paperwork is present and all relevant details are recorded on the system, noting any special requirements e.g. refrigeration, hazardous loads and livestock.

I use the weighbridge check-in system for freight, control entry and exit points, and manage parking within the freight yard.

Security is at the forefront of our operations; this includes ensuring vehicles entering the Port meet security and vessel requirements and controlling visitor access, ensuring safe and proper conduct of all visitors are in line with procedures.

We all work collaboratively at Pembroke Dock Ferry Terminal to help ensure operations run as smoothly as possible, this includes liaising with the PDFT Shift Supervisor, Irish Ferries office, Border Force and I also act as a “buddy” for Gate 1 lone workers when requested.

What kind of duties do you and your team undertake in a typical day?

Under direction of the shift supervisor, I manage the loading of yard traffic onto the vessel, conduct security patrols and monitor CCTV in the freight yard and surrounding areas, monitor freight yard traffic and conduct yard tallies, marshal vehicles in the yard and escort vehicles from the ferry.

What is the best thing about working at PDFT?

I enjoy working as a team, liaising with Irish Ferries and Border Force, and welcoming and training new colleagues.

What is the most interesting fact that people should know about Pembroke Dock or the Milford Haven Waterway?

The Milford Haven Waterway is one of the deepest natural harbours in the world.

The Millennium Falcon that was used in Star Wars was built in the Western Hangar at Pembroke Port.

The Flying Boats used in World War II were moored in the harbour in Pembroke Dock, you can find out more about their significant history at the Pembroke Dock Heritage Centre.

What has been your favourite or most memorable day in work at PDFT?

It’s hard to choose a favourite day but I really enjoyed being involved with the security of the cruise ships!

Which activity at the Port most interests you and why?

What interests me the most at the Port is the security and keeping everyone safe, as safety is fundamental within our operations.

Have you got any special skills/talents or hobbies?

I’m a great cook and keep busy doing maintenance when I’m not in work.

I also enjoy cycling and hiking, especially in France!
