WAVE is a collaborative community project that was set up in 2014 to tackle tombstoning after countless reports of youngsters jumping into the waterway from Milford Marina. This was recognised as a serious safety issue with many associated dangers. Safety is a priority for the Port, and as an organisation which is very much part of the community we wanted to do something to highlight the dangers and keep people safe.
This year we partnered with Milford Youth Matters, Dyfed Powys Police, the RNLI, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Services, St Johns Ambulance and Milford Haven School. Around 350 children aged between 11-14 attended a serious of workshops which gave them tools to help them make better decisions. For example in one of the sessions we talked about ways to deal with peer pressure and in another the consequences of jumping in. We are very aware that stopping tombstoning completely is unlikely, so we also provided them with information on how to handle a dangerous situation should they find themselves in one. A representative from Milford Haven School commented: “Wave was a fantastic opportunity for pupils to gain vital and potentially lifesaving information. The sessions generated a lot of discussion both in school and at home around how we can enjoy our beautiful coast safely”.
Tombstoning, or jumping, is a trend that I am sure anyone who has grown up on the coast is aware of. In fact, there have been countless reports of young people jumping into the water from all over the country. It is considered a ‘rite of passage’ activity that under the right conditions and supervision can be great fun. This isn’t just an issue in Milford Haven, but because the Waterway is home to some of the largest tankers in the world, to fishing trawlers and hobby yachts, it is particularly dangerous.
Tombstoning can be fatal. Two people die every year from tombstoning.
Cold water shock is just one of the potential consequences of jumping into the water, as well as the danger of hidden debris from boat wreckages, litter, shopping trolleys and any number of items.
Over the last 6 years, the event has received such incredible feedback from not only the students who have attended but everyone involved, and we are grateful to our partners for their support in delivering such an important message to our young people.
