Over 130 pupils from Milford Haven and Pembroke Dock will be offered the opportunity to participate in the DofE Wales programme this year thanks to support from the Port of Milford Haven.
The Port has become a new Silver Associate Supporter of the DofE Award enabling young people from Ysgol Harri Tudur and Milford Haven School to take part in positive activities within the community whilst gaining employability skills for the future. Training will also be provided to new leaders to ensure the participants receive support throughout the project.
The DofE award is a voluntary, non-competitive personal development programme of activities for young people. Participants can choose the type of activities they wish to get involved with, such as volunteering, skills, physical and an exciting expedition, all of which build skills, experience and confidence to help them grow and pursue successful careers.
Ian Gwilym, Senior Relationships Manager for DofE Wales, said “It’s fantastic news for our charity that the Port is able to support the further development of the DofE in Pembrokeshire. Young people have been particularly badly hit by the pandemic, it’s turned young people’s worlds upside down. Familiar routines and connections of school, college and daily life have been cruelly stripped away, we know that the DofE can provide essential structure, focus and purpose for young people”.
Community Engagement Assistant at the Port, Lauren Williams, added “The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a world-renowned programme for enabling young people to explore new opportunities and achieve their goals. It’s really important for us to support initiatives that make a real difference to people’s personal wellbeing and we would encourage pupils in Milford Haven and Pembroke Dock to make the most of this fantastic opportunity.”

Port of Milford Haven
The Port of Milford Haven is the UK’s top energy port and Wales’ busiest port handling around 20% of Britain’s seaborne trade in oil and gas. It is widely recognised in the industry as the energy capital of the UK.
The Port, along with the cluster of energy-related businesses along the Waterway, is a key driver of economic activity in Pembrokeshire, attracting inward investment and supporting over 4,000 jobs.
The Port of Milford Haven also owns and operates Pembroke Port and Milford Dock. Activities such as cargo handling, ferry operations, fish landing and cruise calls as well as a first class marina are spread across these two sites.
One of the most prominent on the West Coast, the Port is in the heart of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, the only Coastal National Park in Great Britain. It is marked as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and has many areas designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
The Port of Milford Haven is a trust port – an independent, commercially run organisation that has statutory responsibilities governed by its Acts, to maintain and improve navigation and the provision of Port and Harbour services and facilities. Additionally, the Port provides significant financial and in-kind support to a wide variety of local causes. All profits are retained within the business to fund these objectives.
