Four Pembrokeshire students have been awarded scholarships from the Port of Milford Haven. Rebecca Foster, Isabelle Hughes, Elizabeth Jenkins and Rhiannon Morgan will join the Port for a three week placement this summer, as well as each receiving a £1,500 award.
Rebecca from Clunderwen is studying History at Durham University; Isabelle is from Roch and is in the third year of a Molecular and Cellular Biology degree at Oxford University; Elizabeth is from Pembroke Dock and is studying Geology at Plymouth University and Rhiannon from Houghton is in the third year of a Law degree at Aberystwyth University.
The scholarship scheme opened for applications in September and the successful students were shortlisted and interviewed in December by a panel consisting of Chris Martin, Chairman at the Port of Milford Haven; Maxine Thomas, Head of Safeguarding and Learner Services at Pembrokeshire College and Yvonne Evans, Chair of Governors at Milford School.
To be eligible for the scholarship scheme, students had to be enrolled on an undergraduate course at a higher education establishment and completed the majority of their secondary education in Pembrokeshire.
Chris Martin said “We were thrilled with the quality of applicants again this year and the Port of Milford Haven is delighted to support these four successful students through part of their academic career. They are a credit to themselves, their families and Pembrokeshire.”
The students will begin their work placements in July when they will experience the diverse range of activities and operations that take place at Wales’ largest port.

Port of Milford Haven
The Port of Milford Haven is the UK’s top energy port and Wales’ busiest port handling around 20% of Britain’s seaborne trade in oil and gas. It is widely recognised in the industry as the energy capital of the UK.
The Port, along with the cluster of energy-related businesses along the Waterway, is a key driver of economic activity in Pembrokeshire, attracting inward investment and supporting over 4,000 jobs.
The Port of Milford Haven also owns and operates Pembroke Port and Milford Dock. Activities such as cargo handling, ferry operations, fish landing and cruise calls as well as a first class marina are spread across these two sites.
One of the most prominent on the West Coast, the Port is in the heart of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, the only Coastal National Park in Great Britain. It is marked as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and has many areas designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
The Port of Milford Haven is a trust port – an independent, commercially run organisation that has statutory responsibilities governed by its Acts, to maintain and improve navigation and the provision of Port and Harbour services and facilities. Additionally, the Port provides significant financial and in-kind support to a wide variety of local causes. All profits are retained within the business to fund these objectives.
