Karen Penny, who lives in the Gower, has embarked on a continuous walk circumnavigating the 19,000 miles of the British and Irish Coastline, and 20 of the largest islands, to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research UK. On the 25th January, Karen stopped off at Milford Waterfront as part of this 4-year journey.
Milford Waterfront has contributed to this incredible undertaking by sponsoring Karen’s one night stay in Milford Haven, with a room at the Heart of Oak as she passed through on her journey. As well as this, the Port of Milford Haven is donating £200 to Karen’s cause.
Karen’s family were sadly affected by Alzheimer’s, and this has inspired her to raise as much money as possible for the charity. She is dedicating the next four years of her life to raising a target of £100,000.
Karen Penny commented: “This is an incredible journey that I am undertaking. I set off from Southgate in the Gower, and I am currently in the first leg of my journey, heading up to Fishguard to make my way over to Rosslare, Ireland. I am very proud to be the first woman to be undertaking the feat, and all for a cause that is very dear to my heart. I would like to extend thanks not just to the Port of Milford Haven and Milford Waterfront for putting me up for the night and donating, but also to everyone who has come out in support, and of course sponsored me and helped to raise money for such a deserving charity.”
Karen Lewis, Tourism Manager, Milford Waterfront added: “We have worked with Karen and her husband previously as part of our park run scheme, and were more than happy to organise a hotel stay for her night in Milford Haven, as well as a donation to help her reach her goal. This is an awe-inspiring achievement that Karen is working towards, and all of us here at the Port are cheering her on.”

Milford Waterfront
Milford Waterfront is a multi-million pound regeneration project being led by the Port of Milford Haven. It aims to revitalise the marina and docks into a vibrant destination, adding to the existing mix of leisure, retail and dining businesses and boosting the economy by providing long term, sustainable jobs.
A number of flagship projects have already been completed at the site including the installation of new lock gates that have significantly reduced locking times and the construction of new fishing buildings for the industry.
The new development will also celebrate the arts, culture and heritage of the area, working in partnership with key stakeholders. The Port already hosts a busy calendar of events at the marina such as Torch Theatre Sunset Cinema screenings and awards ceremonies which add to the diverse range of attractions on the waterfront.
In June 2018, Pembrokeshire County Council unanimously approved a revision to the Milford Waterfront development’s outline planning consent.
