The Port of Milford Haven plans to bring Carriage Drive back to life and would like to hear your ideas about how to improve the area.

Carriage Drive (also known as The Avenue) is the former formal entrance used by officers in horse drawn carriages to access their residences inside the Port walls, the Georgian buildings on the street now known as The Terrace in Pembroke Dock.

The area has been identified as benefiting from restoration and heritage enhancements, and now, in partnership with Pembroke Dock Heritage Centre, the team is seeking input from the community to produce a joint vision for a better, more community focussed use of Carriage Drive.

"Interest in the heritage and future potential of Pembroke Dock has never been greater. We want to enhance this space giving the public and our customers and visitors amenity and experience they’ll tell others about when they visit the Dockyard. We can all play a part in developing what goes into Carriage Drive – no ideas are off limits!" said Tim James, Head of Commercial Development and Energy at the Port of Milford Haven.

Ports have always evolved to meet the needs of the community and country, and Pembroke Port is no exception. Visit ‘Reviving Carriage Drive’, to explore the area via virtual tours, delve into the past and compare the area through the ages.

Here, visitors can make suggestions for either Environmental, Heritage or Amenities improvements to the area, vote for, and add to existing ideas. Want to see more plants for bees? Tell us! Want more innovative celebration of heritage? Tell us!

All ideas will be considered and help form the basis of a funding application for the ambitious project. Pembroke Dock Heritage Centre will act as a hub for the project, where members of the community can also access the website and have their say.

Graham Clarkson, Chairman of the Pembroke Dock Heritage Centre said "This is a fantastic idea to bring together local people in the constructive planning and improvement of the area. Members of the community are invited to use the dedicated community HUB at the Heritage Centre where they can submit suggestions to the Port of Milford Haven. I would urge you to take advantage of this opportunity and make your suggestions known."

The project was launched on 12th July 2021 and remains open for 3 weeks. This project is being supported by the Coastal Communities Adapting Together project exploring digital tools to engage people with change and building adaptive capacity to climate change in the communities of Pembroke Dock and Milford Haven.

Port of Milford Haven

The Port of Milford Haven is the UK’s top energy port and Wales’ busiest port handling around 20% of Britain’s seaborne trade in oil and gas.  It is widely recognised in the industry as the energy capital of the UK.

The Port, along with the cluster of energy-related businesses along the Waterway, is a key driver of economic activity in Pembrokeshire, attracting inward investment and supporting over 4,000 jobs.

The Port of Milford Haven also owns and operates Pembroke Port and Milford Dock.  Activities such as cargo handling, ferry operations, fish landing and cruise calls as well as a first class marina are spread across these two sites.

One of the most prominent on the West Coast, the Port is in the heart of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, the only Coastal National Park in Great Britain. It is marked as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and has many areas designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

The Port of Milford Haven is a trust port – an independent, commercially run organisation that has statutory responsibilities governed by its Acts, to maintain and improve navigation and the provision of Port and Harbour services and facilities.  Additionally, the Port provides significant financial and in-kind support to a wide variety of local causes.  All profits are retained within the business to fund these objectives.
