The Commanding Officer of the largest naval base in Western Europe has today joined the Port of Milford Haven as a Non-Executive Director. Shortly to retire from the Royal Navy, Commodore Ian Shipperley CBE of Devonport has almost forty years experience in port operations and a proven track record in the management of risk and safety at Board level.
After joining the Royal Navy in 1980, he has held a number of maritime roles including Marine Engineering Officer of HMS Southampton where he took part in disaster relief in the Caribbean in the wake of hurricanes, Chief Engineer of HMS Ocean during the 2003 Gulf War and Head of Safety Policy for the Royal Navy leading a 5000-strong naval engineering branch as the Deputy Chief Naval Engineer Officer.
Commodore Shipperley is looking forward to serving as a Non-Executive Director, commenting “I am pleased to be joining the Port’s Board at such an exciting time. I have been particularly impressed with plans for the regeneration of Milford Waterfront and Pembroke Port, whilst at the same time continuing to operate Wales’ largest port capable of delivering almost 30% of the UK’s seaborne trade in oil and gas.”
Chris Martin, Chairman of the Port of Milford Haven, said “We are delighted to appoint Ian to the Board. His experience in the marine industry coupled with his vast knowledge of safety policy will be an asset to the overall expertise of the Board. We are currently in the process of appointing two new members, which we expect to complete by the spring. I would like thank our outgoing members David Snelson and Sue Davenport for the outstanding contribution and enthusiasm they have shown towards the Port’s achievements and vision for the future during their terms.”

Port of Milford Haven
The Port of Milford Haven is the UK’s top energy port and Wales’ busiest port handling around 20% of Britain’s seaborne trade in oil and gas. It is widely recognised in the industry as the energy capital of the UK.
The Port, along with the cluster of energy-related businesses along the Waterway, is a key driver of economic activity in Pembrokeshire, attracting inward investment and supporting over 4,000 jobs.
The Port of Milford Haven also owns and operates Pembroke Port and Milford Dock. Activities such as cargo handling, ferry operations, fish landing and cruise calls as well as a first class marina are spread across these two sites.
One of the most prominent on the West Coast, the Port is in the heart of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, the only Coastal National Park in Great Britain. It is marked as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and has many areas designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
The Port of Milford Haven is a trust port – an independent, commercially run organisation that has statutory responsibilities governed by its Acts, to maintain and improve navigation and the provision of Port and Harbour services and facilities. Additionally, the Port provides significant financial and in-kind support to a wide variety of local causes. All profits are retained within the business to fund these objectives.
