As a Trust Port, the Port of Milford Haven is committed to providing opportunities for future generations, supporting industrial growth and delivering projects that will create jobs and a brighter outlook for the region.

With new apprenticeship opportunities around the corner, it’s a good time to register your interest to join the Port. It’s a great route for anyone in their early career or without a traditional educational background to enter professional life. You’ll acquire industry-specific qualifications, training, and the experience needed to begin a fulfilling career here in Pembrokeshire at the Port of Milford Haven.

During National Apprenticeship Week 2025 we caught up with Craig Davies, our Junior Systems Administrator, who was one of our recent apprentices…

When did you do your apprenticeship?

I started my apprenticeship at the Port in September 2021, straight out of college after finishing my Level 3 Practitioner in IT course. The apprenticeship took two full years, and I finished in September 2023.

And then did you go straight into your current job?

Yes, I started as a full-time Junior Systems Administrator within the Digital Solutions and Delivery department – the same department as where I did my apprenticeship – but with a little more responsibility.

Did you have any worries going into your apprenticeship, or challenges whilst doing it?

It was definitely a big step, and a big change coming out of college into pretty much full-time work, but overall I really enjoyed the process. It was something new, something different, and something I could really throw myself into.

Did you like the step up from college to working as a professional?

Yes, I liked having more responsibility. It was no longer just going to college every day; earning money while learning was a very welcome big step into the real world.

Were there any highlights or moments that stood out during your apprenticeship?

Getting to know everyone, socialising and meeting new people. Some of the best times were doing things that the Port put on for staff, like team building exercises and socials. We did an escape room once which was a lot of fun! It really helped me feel comfortable and break the ice. Also, completing the apprenticeship itself was a big personal success, which was obviously a major highlight.

Since then, you've been working at the Port. Can you outline your current role?

As a Junior System Administrator, mainly I am first-tier support for staff. I deal with the Helpdesk calls that come through alongside my colleague John, plus day-to-day tasks like monitoring the IT systems and setting up new staff’s equipment, fixing any issues that arise.

And do you enjoy it?

Yes, very much. It’s rewarding work, and no day is the same. Sometimes I find myself out on a jetty or over in Pembroke Ferry Terminal, so it's really a varied job role which is nice. It keeps everything fresh.

Why did you decide to take the apprenticeship route into professional life?

Coming out of college, I wasn’t keen on the idea of university; I just really didn't fancy going into another three to four years of studying. But the apprenticeship opportunity gave me a chance to continue furthering my education in a way that was more appealing… I wanted to get real, hands-on experience – something that the classroom never truly gave me.

Do you think apprenticeships are a good ‘way in’ to an organisation like the Port?

Yes, definitely. They get you that foot in the door, and an entry position. A lot of places don’t offer someone straight out of college that kind of chance. I’d say that without the apprenticeship, I don’t think I’d be in the position I’m in today.

And how about the professional contacts you’ve gained?

I've been out and about, had training in London, and done a bunch of different courses to further my skills, both during and after the apprenticeship. Meeting other people at these things, in the same environment or field as yourself is always great for expanding your knowledge, and for networking. The contacts I’ve made have been very valuable for my career progression so far.

Is Pembrokeshire a good place for young people to build their career?

Big question! It's a lovely place – I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. But it's also a small place. I think the opportunities down here are a lot harder to find, but that makes it a lot more rewarding when you do find one. Especially in IT, which is more of a ‘big city, big company’ kind of job.

I'm sure as the years go on, many more opportunities will arise, because industry in Pembrokeshire is definitely on the rise. So if you get the chance to build a career down here, 100% go for it!

What would you say to someone unsure whether to do an apprenticeship?

I would say, if it's in a field you're interested in and aligns with your personal ambitions and career goals, then an apprenticeship is an excellent way to get straight into meaningful work.

Pembrokeshire is an exciting place to build a rewarding and interesting career, and now is a great time to consider starting your professional journey as an apprentice at the Port of Milford Haven.
