Alzheimer’s Society Cymru has been selected by staff at the Port of Milford Haven to be its Charitable Cause for 2019. Each year staff at the Port vote for the cause they want to support which means that in addition to a lump sum donation made by the Port itself, staff will raise additional funds throughout the year by organising and taking part in various fundraising activities and events, and by volunteering.

Alzheimer’s Society is the only charity in the UK that campaigns for change, funds research to find a cure, and supports people living with dementia.

Sue Phelps, County Director for Alzheimer’s Society Cymru, commented: “We are delighted to be uniting against dementia with the Port of Milford Haven whose staff have chosen us as their charity of the year. Currently, there are 45,000 people living with dementia in Wales, and this is set to rise to 100,000 by 2055. All donations from the Port will help us continue to support those tackling dementia and their families.”

In Pembrokeshire, the Alzheimer’s Society has a Dementia Connect service which provides practical advice and information for anyone affected by dementia. Furthermore, a Side by Side service is available in Milford Haven to match people with dementia with dedicated volunteers, enabling them to keep doing the things they love.

Anna Malloy, Stakeholder Engagement and Communications Manager at the Port of Milford Haven added: “Sadly, Alzheimer’s resonates with many of us. Lots of staff at the Port have friends or relatives who have suffered with or who are currently living with dementia and therefore it was a clear leader in our staff vote. We are glad to be helping Alzheimer’s Society Cymru support people in Pembrokeshire living with Dementia.”

Port of Milford Haven

The Port of Milford Haven is the UK’s top energy port and Wales’ busiest port handling around 20% of Britain’s seaborne trade in oil and gas. It is widely recognised in the industry as the energy capital of the UK.
The Port, along with the cluster of energy-related businesses along the Waterway, is a key driver of economic activity in Pembrokeshire, attracting inward investment and supporting over 4,000 jobs.
The Port of Milford Haven also owns and operates Pembroke Port and Milford Dock. Activities such as cargo handling, ferry operations, fish landing and cruise calls as well as a first class marina are spread across these two sites.
One of the most prominent on the West Coast, the Port is in the heart of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, the only Coastal National Park in Great Britain. It is marked as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and has many areas designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
The Port of Milford Haven is a trust port – an independent, commercially run organisation that has statutory responsibilities governed by its Acts, to maintain and improve navigation and the provision of Port and Harbour services and facilities. Additionally, the Port provides significant financial and in-kind support to a wide variety of local causes. All profits are retained within the business to fund these objectives.
